ACIA Module 1

The ACIA modules are a core educational requirement toward achieving the Associate of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (ACIA) designation. ACIA Module 1 introduces participants to actuarial practice in the Canadian context, building on academic learning and preparing them for the professional work environment.

The modules bridge CIA-accredited university education, or education obtained through other actuarial organizations, with the work environment. They are administered online via D2L Brightspace, a learning management system, and focus on applying knowledge acquired through a recognized university degree or other Associate-level education.

Together, the modules support the development of professional actuarial competencies required in Canada as ACIAs. Professionals holding this designation have the knowledge to identify, evaluate and analyze risk along with the technical, communication and business skills outlined in our education syllabus. 

 

Who should take ACIA Module 1

Requirements

  • Pathway 1 students or graduates from CIA-accredited university programs.
  • Pathway 2 participants using Society of Actuaries (SOA) activities who did not complete the SOA’s Preliminary Actuarial Foundations and Actuarial Science Foundations modules.
  • Pathway 2 participants who are fully qualified actuaries of International Actuarial Association member organizations not recognized by the CIA.

  • There are no formal prerequisites for the ACIA modules. It is expected that participants will have completed some actuarial courses prior to taking ACIA Module 1.
  • A CIA Student or Candidate membership is required to register for CIA educational activities. If you are not a member, complete the free orientation module and apply to be a Student or Candidate member today.

There is no deadline to register. Participants will have six months from the date of registration to complete ACIA Module 1. 

Cancellation and refund policy

Cancellation requests submitted after registration but before logging in to the platform may be eligible for a refund. Send cancellation requests to education@cia-ica.ca. Refunds are subject to a $100 administrative fee.
