The Advanced Professionalism and Leadership Course (APLC) is one of the final requirements to becoming a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA). For more on FCIA requirements and relevant transition rules, see Becoming a Fellow.

Providing you with valuable tools as you expand your professional responsibilities, this unique learning experience explores the nuances of professionalism and leadership while offering you a prime opportunity to build meaningful connections with your peers.
Participants can expect practical sessions that are engaging and interactive, in the areas of professionalism, leadership and communications. You will discuss key issues facing the profession and practice-specific hot topics, learn about emerging areas of practice, and be challenged to apply the CIA’s Rules of Professional Conduct to ethical and professional situations you may face.

A CIA ACIA or Candidate membership is required to register for CIA educational activities. If you are not a member, complete the free orientation module and apply to become a Student or Candidate member today.
Supporting documentation (transcripts and/or proof of a recognized fellow designation) must be uploaded at time of registration.
The course has been developed as one of the final steps toward applying for your FCIA designation. The following eligibility requirements apply:
- CIA Pathway 1 or 2 participants must hold the ACIA designation and have successfully completed at least one FCIA exam.
- CIA Pathway 3 participants must hold a recognized fellow-level designation (FSA, FCAS, FIA, FASSA, FIAA, FSAI, DAV).
All participants, regardless of which pathway they’re following, must have a minimum of 24 months' actuarial experience in a chosen area of practice, attested to at registration.
- Complete all pre-reading before the start of the course.
- Attend all sessions – attendance will be taken.
- Do not miss more than 10 minutes of course time.
- Complete all assigned work in accordance with instructions.
- Complete the APLC attestation of completion, which will be assigned in the e-learning platform at the end of the course.
Transition
The APLC is not a requirement for recognition of the Casualty Actuarial Society Course on Professionalism. For more information on these requirements, please see the CIA’s Professionalism Workshop page.
If you attended the CIA’s Practice Education Course (discontinued) prior to December 31, 2023, you are exempt from taking the APLC.

Note: A 10-minute rule applies to this course; participants cannot miss more than 10 minutes of total course time over the two days. Please plan any return travel to ensure you are present until the end of the closing session.

Cancellation and refund policy
Cancellation requests received in writing by CIA Head Office by October 30, 2026, are eligible for a refund, minus administrative costs. Same-day cancellations and no-shows are not eligible for refunds except under special circumstances, which will be evaluated on an individual basis.
